Do 急ぐ and 焦る both mean “to hurry”? 🤔 They’re simil Do 急ぐ and 焦る both mean “to hurry”? 🤔
They’re similar, but the key difference is action vs. mental pressure. Today’s Japanese synonyms:
急ぐ (isogu) vs. 焦る (aseru) 🏃 急ぐ = to hurry
It focuses on doing something faster or moving quickly. 😰 焦る = to feel rushed / flustered
It focuses on the mental pressure you feel when you think you don’t have enough time or things aren’t going as planned. 📌 Examples: 時間がないので、急いで駅へ行った。
Jikan ga nai node, isoide eki e itta.
“I was short on time, so I hurried to the station.” 試験で時間がなくて、焦ってしまった。
Shiken de jikan ga nakute, asette shimatta.
“I ran out of time on the test and started to panic.” 💡 Easy way to remember: 急ぐ = speed up your action
焦る = pressure speeds up your mind You can 急ぐ without 焦る — and when you 焦る, you may lose your calm and make mistakes. 👉 Swipe through the post to compare the nuance and try the Mini Quiz! Can you get both answers right? 👀
